Piet Modriaan was an artist born in Holland who later moved to Paris and set up a group of artists and designers whose aim was to reduce everyday objects to their basic abstract form.  His paintings comprised blocks of colour surrounded by horizontal and vertical lines but he split from the group when one of his colleagues introduced the concept of diagonal lines.
